BIOSCOPE

The word "bioscope" is a compound of the Greek "bio", which means "life" and the also Greek "Scopos", which means "observation". So Bioscope really means "observation of life". But the latter half of the word can also refer to the word "scopion", which is a device used to observe something. Examples are e.g. "stethoscope", "microscope", "telescope", etc.

Therefore with the invention of a special camera that was able to photograph a large number of pictures rapidly and another device, which could show them at the same rate, it was evident that this new device should be called "bioscope". Consequently a device intended to "observe life".

In a fairly large advertisement of 22nd October 1899 Klagenfurter Zeitung wrote: "Bioskop ist eingetroffen" and narrates that the presentation will take place at Hotel Sandwirt where life-size pictures will be shown. The name bioscope is still used in a number of languages to describe the Danish "biograf".
